POEM:
AS I GREW OLDER

**It was a long
time ago.
I have almost
forgotten my dream.**
English: The poet
had a dream long ago, but now he can hardly remember it.

In front of me,
Bright like a sun—
My dream.**

Rose slowly,
Slowly,
Between me and my dream.**

**Rose until it
touched the sky—
The wall.
Shadow.
I am black.**
English: The wall
grew so tall it touched the sky and cast a shadow. The poet refers to his black
identity.

**I lie down in
the shadow.
No longer the
light of my dream before me,
Above me.
Only the thick wall.

feels hopeless in the darkness; the dream's light is gone, only the wall and
shadow remain.
