'' Death of a Clerk''

---By Anton Chekhov

About the Author:---

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904) was a Russian short story writer, playwright, and physician, considered one of the greatest masters of short fiction in world literature.

Although trained as a doctor, he regarded writing as his true profession. His medical background gave him a profound understanding of human suffering, which he depicted with realism and simplicity in his works.

Chekhov’s stories are known for their brevity, wit, and deep observation of everyday life. They often explore the struggles, fears, and trivial concerns of ordinary people.

As a playwright, he wrote celebrated plays such as The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard. These works transformed modern drama with their subtle emotions and naturalistic dialogues.

Chekhov died of tuberculosis at the young age of 44, yet his influence continues to shape and inspire writers and dramatists worldwide.

death of clerk

Summary in English with Hindi Translation:---

Paragraph 1 (English):
The story’s main character is a minor clerk named Ivan Dmitrich Chervyakov, a timid and humble man who suffers from a deep sense of inferiority. His life revolves around his petty duties and his constant fear of higher authorities.

Paragraph 2 (English):
One evening, while watching a play at the theater, he suddenly sneezes. Unfortunately, the sneeze lands on a high-ranking general named Brizzhalov who is sitting nearby. Startled and embarrassed, Chervyakov immediately apologizes. The general replies politely that it is nothing serious, but Chervyakov cannot calm his anxious mind.

Paragraph 3 (English):
The next day, Chervyakov keeps worrying that the general might have felt insulted. He goes to the general’s office to apologize again. The general says it is all right, but Chervyakov is not satisfied. Driven by fear, he repeats his apology several times.

Paragraph 4 (English):
At last, the general loses patience. Annoyed by Chervyakov’s constant apologies, he angrily orders him to leave. These harsh words crush Chervyakov’s spirit.

Paragraph 5 (English):
Feeling humiliated and terrified, Chervyakov returns home, lies down on his bed, and shortly afterward dies.

Paragraph 6 (English):
The story is not just about the death of a man, but a satire on the bureaucracy and the miserable condition of small clerks in society. Chervyakov dies not because of illness, but because of fear, humiliation, and his own lack of self-respect.

Q&A on The Death of a Clerk:---

Q1. Do you think the ending of the story is suitable? If not, what ending would you suggest?

Answer:
The ending of the story is sudden and tragic, as Chervyakov dies out of humiliation and fear. It is suitable in the sense that Chekhov wanted to show how meaningless fears can destroy a person’s life. However, I feel the story could have ended differently. Instead of dying, Chervyakov might have realized the foolishness of his repeated apologies and learned to live with more self-confidence. Such an ending would have given a positive message about overcoming fear and respecting oneself.

Q2. Write the summary of the story in your own words.

Answer:
The story is about Ivan Dmitrich Chervyakov, a timid clerk. While watching a play, he accidentally sneezes on General Brizzhalov. Though he apologizes, he keeps worrying that the general is angry. Out of fear, he apologizes again and again until the general becomes irritated and orders him to leave. Feeling deeply insulted, Chervyakov goes home, lies on his bed, and dies. The story shows how small clerks live under constant fear of authority and lose their self-respect.
