Chapter 5

Bores

summary

Paragraph 1 (English)

It is really very difficult to write about bores. A bore is always unaware of the fact that he bores others. On the contrary, he thinks that he is a very companionable person and that his company is liked by all.
But according to the essayist, at times almost everyone becomes a bore because everyone has something to say whether the listener is interested in hearing or not. But there are some who are always bores due to their egotism. They are generally under the impression that they have many interesting things to say. Such bores are always ready to talk about something and they are never short of incidents to tell. A bore, whatever he says, keeps himself as the central figure of his talks, because all his talks revolve around him or his near and dear ones.

Paragraph 2 (English)

Bores are generally very happy people, because they have many things to say. But they flourish only due to the fact that they always get listeners, whether they are willing to hear them or not. Thus notorious bores always get an audience. It is all due to the kind nature of people who fail to say, “Please don’t tease or tire us.” So, it is the cowardice of people which allows bores to flourish. The author narrates a funny example of a person who invented a trick to save himself from boredom. Whenever he had to listen to boring talks, his page boy used to come and say that there was a telephone call for him. But such a trick cannot last long.

Paragraph 3 (English)

The author says that crafty men and busy men can never be bores. Bores keep telling the same stories and incidents again and again. Here again comes the kindness and politeness of people, who keep listening to them. The essayist narrates an incident from his memoirs, telling that he once called a man for dinner, though he never liked him because of his boring talks, but was compelled to do so when he met him. According to the author, bores can be avoided only by total evasion, but it is certain that bores will always remain. They can be reduced if magazines stop publishing distasteful and incredible thoughts and such other boring topics.

Important Questions & Answers

Q1. What is the attitude of a bore towards himself and others?

Answer:
A bore is always unaware that he bores others. On the contrary, he thinks he is a very friendly and companionable person whose company everyone enjoys. He usually talks about himself or his close relatives and believes that all his stories are interesting. Bores are happy people because they always find something to say, but they flourish mainly because listeners, out of politeness, do not stop them.

Q2. Why does the essayist say that almost everyone becomes a bore at times?

Answer:
The essayist believes that everyone becomes a bore sometimes because every person has something to say, whether the listener is interested or not. Even intelligent and normal people may bore others occasionally by repeating their experiences or insisting on sharing unwanted details. However, there are some permanent bores who bore others all the time due to their self-centered nature.

Q3. What kind of people are always bores, according to the essayist?

Answer:
According to the essayist, people who are egotistic and self-centered are always bores. They constantly talk about themselves and their near ones. Such people repeat the same incidents again and again, never running short of stories. They think that what they say is very important, but in reality, it irritates others.

Q4. How do bores flourish in society?

Answer:
Bores flourish because people are too polite or cowardly to stop them. Listeners tolerate boring talks instead of saying, “Please don’t tease or tire us.” This kindness and politeness of others provide an audience to bores, helping them survive everywhere.

Q5. What example does the author give about escaping bores?

Answer:
The author narrates the example of a person who invented a trick to escape boredom. Whenever he was trapped in a boring conversation, his page boy would interrupt and say that there was a telephone call for him. In this way, he managed to avoid boring company. However, such tricks cannot last long and are not a permanent solution.

Q6. What solution does the author suggest to avoid bores?

Answer:
According to the essayist, bores can be avoided only by total evasion, that is, by staying away from them completely. He also suggests that magazines should stop publishing distasteful and dull topics, as such writings encourage boredom. However, the essayist admits that bores will always exist in society, though their number may be reduced.
